Sympathy for the Devil: "Mr. Nichols" by Coldcut Featuring Saul Williams

I just thought I would share this with you: I am in the midst of a love affair with Saul Williams. Have been for some time. In fact, I began this blog with what I consider to be one of the greatest political Hip-Hop songs of all time.

He's done it to me again--I just came across "Mr. Nichols" by Coldcut (on which Saul is featured and wrote the lyrics) thanks to my roommate @aboxofgoo. On this track he has accomplished something that I never could have. He finds empathy and tenderness for who I have only marginalized as the "enemy" in my mind: the bourgeois white collar business man. Of course men who have accepted the necessity of their financial trading when faced with the reality of the oppression that they are thereby implicit in are in a sense my enemy and an enemy of all working class people. But no one can just be an enemy. They are victims, too, of themselves and of a society unjustly and inequitably organized, same as anyone else. Saul Williams has highlighted this victimization and captured their humanity. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Saul Williams appears on my sidebar because he is revolutionary, both in his conceptions of class, race, religion, and gender, and because of his willingness to favor truth in his lyrics over what could have made him a pop culture icon. His work should be familiar to any modern-day Leftist.

This is in no way a stalker-like shrine thing. They are just pictures.

This is Saul Williams' Alter Ego, Niggy Tardust, from his third album "The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!"
